Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sr. Bertha Bergeron, OSU, an Ursuline Sister who served her community as a kitchen sister for many years in many convents in New York, Maine and Rome. Sister Bertha, age 85, died on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at St. Mary's d'Youville Pavilion in Lewiston. She is remembered for her many kindnesses and spirit of gratitude.

She was born in Sanford on June 2, 1929, the daughter of Evariste and Aurore (Ouellette) Bergeron. She received her elementary and secondary education and graduated from St. Ignatius High School in Sanford in 1947. On Jan. 15, 1951, Bertha entered the Ursuline Sisters' Novitiate in Belgrade. Shortly after, the Novitiate was transferred to Crystal City, Missouri, where Bertha, under the name of Sr. John Joseph, made her first religious profession in 1954. She pronounced her final vows on July 16, 1957, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sister Bertha served in communities in Beacon, New York, Rome, Italy, Springfield, Massachusetts and in Waterville and Brunswick, Maine. While in Brunswick, she was a true assistant to Sr. Angela, Superior and school principal.
