Father Bertrand R. Poussard

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Reverend Father Bertrand R. Poussard, 77, who was called to his eternal home by the Lord on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.

Bertrand Robert Poussard, son of Robert and Yvette (Couture) Poussard, was born on December 30, 1941, in Lewiston.  After graduating from Holy Family School in Lewiston, Bert attended high school at the Seminary of St. Hyacinth in the Province of Quebec, Canada, and then college at the Montreal University.  He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the University of Ottawa and St. Paul’s Seminary, respectively.  The Most Reverend Peter L. Gerety, then Co-Adjutor Bishop of Portland, ordained him to the priesthood at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland on May 20, 1967.

Fr. Poussard formally retired from active ministry in 2004 due to health issues.  Bishop Joseph Gerry, OSB, once wrote to Fr. Poussard:  “I have been deeply impressed with the humility and honesty with which you recognize your gifts and the graciousness with which you have placed yourself at the service of the Church.”

Fr. Poussard is survived by his sister, Louise, and her husband Fernand Roy, and their extended family.  Funeral arrangement will be announced as soon as the family has finalized them.

May Fr. Poussard’s soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
