Earth Day Message from Bishop Deeley

On Earth Day, we remember that God has created our world and placed us in it. There is, therefore, a true harmony that exists between God, ourselves as human persons, and our natural world. In his encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis calls us to live with a consciousness not only of the need to care for the earth, but also for the true human dignity of the person and particularly of those who are poor. When we fail to address harm done to nature or neglect to acknowledge the worth of all people, “it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected.” As we celebrate Earth Day, may we work to strengthen, through cultivation and care, the relationship between humanity and the environment, one which flows from the love of God, so that it is there for future generations to experience and enjoy.
