“Advent by Candlelight” in Bangor to Feature New Format, Venue, and Even Virtual Connections on Saturday, November 13

BANGOR---Hundreds of Catholic women in Maine will gather together, both in person and via livestream, to celebrate our faith at “Advent by Candlelight” on Saturday, November 13. The free event aims to prepare hearts and homes to receive our Savior before the holidays arrive. It will take on a different look in 2021 due to pandemic considerations, as two inspiring talks will be offered at St. Mary Church, located on 768 Ohio Street, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The traditional food, beverages, and table settings will be eliminated this year.

Participants can take part by attending in person at St. Mary or by viewing via livestream. Attendance in person will be limited to 250 women. To register, call Linda at (207) 947-0614 or visit the event's website

The event’s speaker is Laura Phelps, an author and ministry coordinator who has spoken at countless retreats and events across the country. A lifelong Catholic, Laura grew up in the suburbs of New York, wanting to become a star on Broadway. This dream came to a sudden halt when she encountered rejection, questioned her ability, and gave in to the world’s definition of success. As a result, Laura spent many years searching for herself and purpose in just about everything but God.

After marriage, a move across the country, four kids, going broke, and trying to stand beneath the burden of a seemingly meaningless life that she believed “was all that there is,” Laura encountered Christ in a deep and personal way. In an empty church, she found herself whispering a prayer of just two words: “use me.” Consecrating herself to Jesus through Mary, Laura is forever learning how to surrender to God’s will, keeping her greatest weapon, the Holy Rosary, on her at all times. Laura has served in several roles at “Walking with Purpose,” a Catholic ministry that aims to lead women into an intimate relationship with Christ through Scripture and looks forward to sharing what she has learned with those participating on November 13.

This marks the ninth year that St. Paul the Apostle Parish (St. John Church, Bangor; St. Mary Church, Bangor; St. Joseph Church, Brewer; St. Teresa Church, Brewer; St. Matthew Church, Hampden; St. Gabriel Church, Winterport) has held the event. “Advent by Candlelight” is celebrated at many churches throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, and is a grace-filled experience that brings local women together for an inspiring night of community.
