Is Christ Calling You?

Stepping Forward in Faith

COULD CHRIST BE CALLING ME TO BE A PRIEST?

In the Scriptures, we see that those who God called to serve him as leaders among his people often reacted with fear, anxiety, and outright avoidance.  They knew that the pathway of loving service to God and neighbor was daunting and that many sacrifices would be required of them. And yet, with God's help, they responded. They said "Yes," uniting their voices with Mary's great "Fiat" Be it done unto me according to thy word.

DO NOT BE AFRAID!

“Ask yourselves, young people, about the love of Christ. Acknowledge His voice resounding in the temple of your heart. Return His bright and penetrating glance which opens the paths of your life to the horizons of the Church’s mission. It is a taxing mission, today more than ever, to teach men the truth about themselves, about their end, their destiny, and to show faithful souls the unspeakable riches of the love of Christ. Do not be afraid of the radicalness of His demands, because Jesus, who loved us first, is prepared to give Himself to you, as well as asking of you. If He asks much of you, it is because He knows you can give much.” ― Saint John Paul II, The Meaning of Vocation

NO ONE IS MEANT TO DISCERN GOD'S WILL ALONE.

I encourage you to spend time looking through the resources on this site.  Read the vocation stories of our seminarians and priests and listen to how they heard the call to the priesthood. Explore the "Frequently asked Questions" page and learn more about the process of discernment and formation for the priesthood in the section "Path to the Priesthood." Follow the links to other websites that are helpful for discernment.

But please do not make the mistake of trying to discern the priesthood alone! No one is able to discern the will of God alone.  That is why Christ sent his disciples out two by two!  By ourselves, far too often we end up only discerning our fears and our daydreams, but not the real facts that will help us to hear the voice of Christ.

If you find yourself on this website and have wondered about the priesthood, do not let your questions end here. Bring them to your parish priest and contact me so that I can let you know of opportunities for those discerning here in Maine. There are other men in Maine who have the same questions, and there are many priests who have asked them too. You do not need to discern alone!

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, or if you would like help in determining which steps to take next in your discernment:
